Carnelian (Where I Was)

You've always said that this should be a sanctuary and I know you've kept your word. As I find my actions falling short, I'll keep the lessons I have learned. These streets remain so familiar, memories lingering in their quiet, bewildering nature. Beneath my feet are the crumbled remains of fall growing colder. These ambitions are keeping me young, evoking childlike wonder. Where has the time gone? Where do the days go when they leave us? I've left so much behind, but home is where my heart is.

Four pearlescent walls surround to set a scene; silk sky waiting for the stars to render. And on the quiet days pretend it's just a dream; time washed out in shades of blue and green. Wishful thinking cut through tired eyes. Ghost breath beneath cold sheets. Fingers crossed with every last goodbye to keep you here with me. I've been trying my hardest to keep my promises. It hurts the most when I wake up soaked through every layer; frigid in spring heat, blistering my unsteady skin. Attendant to your wilting garden, only to wake and check the rate of your breath. Foaming at some pointed dreamscape. Painted pastels blurring blank before my eyes. Closed and rolling. Underwater. Overflowing. Tear me open. I reject a world without the comfort of your step across my limbs; a world you worked tirelessly to keep me in, keep us in. Carrying every burden stacked like stones upon your tiny frame. Forever waiting for you to reach my side when I call your name. I dread the times it all rewinds to you being ripped away and the blanket static stillness that I just can't seem to fucking shake. I've left so much behind, but I still pray to bring you home; a shameful break into your slumber just so I don't have to feel alone. I've left so much behind. I'm still trying to find the pieces. I've left so much behind. My home is where your heart is.
